Thank You for 2014. Here’s to 2015!
It’s been quite a while since I posted on here and even longer since I took a break to concentrate on other things (Mainly working on the house and attempting to write fiction but with a lot of breaks for dog walks and food!)
This will be my last post on this blog. I fear repetition set in some time ago but I was enjoying my daily fix so much I chose to overlook it and you were all kind enough to let it pass.
Since I stopped the daily blog my computer (internet) has been tormented by reliability issues, some of which I can put down to BT some to the internet provider and some to the building works across the road. They have been annoying but would have been beyond endurance in the full flow of the blog.
My hands are sore with plastering and cement work. I’ve hung a couple of dozen rolls of wallpaper and emptied several large pots of paint. I’m enthused by doing up the house in the same way as I was enthused by the blog. There isn’t time for both. It may well have given me the green shoots of a writing career or it may have fully satisfied the urge to pronounce upon the world I live in. Whatever, it has been fantastic fun and a revelation to discover this world of fabulous people taking time out of eventful lives to share stories, poems, thoughts, photographs, compositions and artworks.
My son and his girlfriend have been running a blog on the complete films of Walt Disney. They carefully prepare each post over weeks of careful research and writing. I had never been much of a fan of Disney (and still find some aspects of his world uncomfortable) but I have come to enjoy reading these posts. I have a yen to perhaps do the same in due course, perhaps on the complete works of Laurel and Hardy (I share a hometown with Stan Laurel). It’s in the maybe file.
For months I maintained a daily post while holding down a full-time job. Now I am fully retired as far as pay-cheque work is concerned and I cannot find time to even write the weekly food diaries.
Blogging has given me a great deal. I’ve discovered some brilliant blogs and some wonderful bloggers. I have learnt a great deal from them and have formed true friendships which I fully intend to maintain. I’ve doubled my knowledge of IT and have improved both writing and cooking skills. I continue to write and I continue to eat well but it is quite a relief to simply enjoy a meal without having to photograph it!
I wish you all the very best. A belated Merry Christmas and good wishes for a happy and prosperous new year. I have enjoyed 2014 enormously and have a very good feeling about 2015. I am going to section off a little part of my week for reading and dropping in the occasional comment and like onto your blogs. If the Stan and Ollie one comes off I’ll let you know but don’t hold your breath… I’ve got a lot of work to do on this house yet. We’ve lived here for nearly a quarter of a century and have continually put off doing it until we had time to do it properly. It is a superb house (built in the year of the French Revolution) and deserves to be lovingly restored to be enjoyed in our future and for future generations. I’ve got plenty to keep me busy.
I leave you with a few favourite pictures from the blogging year and a few of the beard that I will shave off once the house is complete.
Oh, and take a look at David and Melissa’s Disney blog. It’s a darned good read and nudges the memory nicely. I add a link to one of the more recent posts.

Thank you. I have missed your blog and do hope it has done as much for you as it has to its readers.
Good luck with new ventures. Happy 2015 to you and your family. I hope to see you soon (after knee replacement surgery next month)

Thank you for summing up my own feelings of completion so well. You express things so magnanimously. I simply said “Cheerio” on my blog knowing that some readers would wonder why I was talking about a breakfast cereal or a small red saveloy. Of all the blogs I followed, yours was the one I returned to most often (I was going to say “like a dog to its own vomit” but that’s not what I meant!) I always hoped you’d done a posting and I’d simply missed its announcement. All the best for 2015, Simon. You give me hope that there’s a new horizon beyond the blog. I thought bugger being bogged in a blog… I feel a story coming on. Must go! Thanks, good friend.

Your company has been one of the great delights of blogging. Between us, geographically, we have the rest of the world surrounded. I know you were considering hanging up the blog as well. I would urge you not to. I love those stories. I have a few to catch up on, and a few more chapters of your autobiography. It will get read and it will be read with delight.
Your autumn chutney furnished the Christmas cold meats and was delicious. I fully intend to keep you updated of the world of a northern Johnson by email if not by blog.
All good wishes to you Bruce for the coming year. It’s been a pleasure!

I have returned to blogging (perhaps like a dog to its own… as the saying goes). A new address and page arrangement though. Hope all is going well with you and yours Simon.

Gosh I thought for a moment that you were going to start an interior decorating blog……….
Any interesting blogs, ramblings, thoughts or budding books………do share!
Cheers for 201 to you all .
simon682 said:
No. You don’t have to put up with my thoughts on interior design. (I have a daughter with a wonderfully creative eye. I engage her in conversation and then put her ideas into practice!)
Blogging was an ambition and is now in the tick box of history. It has taught me a great deal. Other ambitions remain unrealised.
I wish you every happiness in the coming year and send you sincere thanks for following this blog.
Yours Simon

Well, I hope you have a wonderful 2015. I enjoyed your blog immensely and I’m sorry to see you go but it sounds like the right thing to do. Good luck with all the DIY. 🙂
I’m heading over to your son’s blog now…
simon682 said:
And I have enjoyed yours. I intend to get out to the West of Ireland again in the next few years. I nearly bought a cottage about 9 months ago but chickened out. Seeing how much work I’ve got here on this house I think it was probably a good idea.
All good wishes to you for 2015. Enjoy the Disney Odyssey. They know their cations and their enthusiasm comes over in the blog.
I have really enjoyed your comments and company and hope to continue to enjoy your blog into the future.

If you do come over, there’s a lovely new cycle route that’s opened up here recently that you might like. It’s away from the roads, has fabulous views, and you can even hire a bicycle if you don’t want to bring one all the way over. See http://www.greenway.ie/Trail-AM-01.html or http://mulranny.ie/things-to-do/cycling/ I haven’t tried it yet but I know the area that it goes through and the scenery is stunning.
I enjoyed the first Disney post about Snow White. I look forward to reading more. I started collecting Disney videos long before I had kids and they came in really handy when I finally did. I think I still love them more than the kids do though. 😉
I look forward to seeing you over at my blog every now and then then. So long. 😀

Have missed you blog and am ever so sorry to hear your stopping. Your obviously passionate about everything you partake in doing and portray it so well. So I can understand the effort you’ll focus upon your home. From the tour round Scotland and various other parts, to the whole foodie blogs. I enjoyed them all. Good luck with the house and a very happy new year.
simon682 said:
Thank you so much Mike. I am delighted you have enjoyed these ramblings and these scribblings. I enjoy food and Scotland and the Lake District and have thoroughly enjoyed writing a few thoughts about them.
All best wishes for the New Year. Simon

I can’t bring myself to click the ‘like’ button, Simon: I’m far too selfish. I have derived so much from your blogging as to have tears in my eyes at the thought of having to be without it, permanently.
“I fear repetition set in some time ago but I was enjoying my daily fix so much I chose to overlook it and you were all kind enough to let it pass” – such rubbish.
What you’re doing with the house must be about as rewarding as anything in your life, is my guess – since 1789 ???! Good grief ! How utterly marvellous to be leaving your own mark on history in such fashion !
Jolly will be leading the life of Reilly, I imagine, and you enjoying giving it her. There’s a win|win situation, if you like. 🙂
You’ve had thus far a pretty amazing life; and I hope that it goes on in the same way.
My deep regret is that I shan’t be able to share it any more.
I wish you and the whole family everything you want, forever.
simon682 said:
Oh, I hope you will be able to share it. We’re a long way apart geographically but we have a great deal in common. I feel as though, for a private person, I’ve shared enough for general readers. I’m very happy to continue sharing with those I consider to be friends; and I most certainly would be honoured to place myself in that category with you.
The house is something I want to devote my next year to. We are privileged to be the current trustees (if that is the correct word). It is a wonderful house and deserves to be made secure and lovely. I could have continued earning money and paid others to do this but it is something I’ve always wanted to do myself.
I do consider myself blessed. I’ve got a good life and I fully intend to keep you appraised of it. With love. Simon

You have been and will be missed, Simon. I’ll miss your humour, your food, your photographs and the chance to travel down memory lane with you vicariously. The work on the house sounds highly satisfying. If you do venture back into the blogosphere with Stan and Ollie, let us know. We’ll be there in every nice mess you get us into.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks? I love that movie!!
All the best. 🙂
simon682 said:
Thank you very much and all best wishes to you with your fabulous blog. The Stan and Ollie blog may well happen. I notice that there is a wonderful box set of a fair chunk of their films. The thought of giving myself an excuse to watch them all again is a tempter. And an excuse to pay a visit to my hometown is another.
I’ll keep you posted!

Simon I can understand your dilemma, as I’ve just had time off from blogging too. It’s wonderful that you are able to restore the house. I love the wall paper behind the desk! Wishing you success in your endeavours and a fulfilling and wonderful year (s)!, since you’re not going to be there to say it next year! If ever you get to Australia, we’d love to make contact! Your photographs have given us many nostalgic evenings remembering! Thank you and all good wishes, Barbara
simon682 said:
I must visit Australia at some point in my life and I would love to make contact with you both. I cannot imagine Jolly being able to make the journey and I cannot imagine leaving her long enough to make an antipodean visit worthwhile so it will probably be some years off yet.
I’ve really enjoyed your blog (and will continue to follow it) and have always been delighted to see your comments on my own.
Thank YOU and good wishes from north to south.

Very sad that you are hanging up your blogging boots. I always waited eagerly for the next episode. Your beard is doing well. Mine is almost exclusively grey now even though the thinning thatch on top has retained some colour. I hope you don’t lose touch. We will move back to Britain next month and it would be a privilege to meet you some time on our travels. Best of luck with whatever you embark on in 2015. Enjoy retirement.
simon682 said:
It would be a real privilege for me as well. We must do it. I’m not altogether sure that bearded life is really me but I’m certainly finding myself well suited to retirement. As many pensioners say, “I’ve never been busier”.
Hope all goes well in what will be a busy month. I’ve been planning an email…am still planning it…it will get sent. I’d very much like to keep this correspondence going.

Best wishes Simon, and I hope you don’t go silent forever here on WP! Everything was a delight, but I do understand the burn-out and the desire to mingle in other things.
You and yours have shared some lovely places, made history enjoyable and created a yen for a visit to your country.
Be well, and do keep in touch!

Happy New Year, Simon, and I know you will enjoy all the things in store next. I do not think you got repetitious at all! But I do understand that it can be hard to blog and still do the other things one loves. I am still trying to blog, but it has been 5-6 weeks since my last post, so I’m not sure that counts as blogging! 🙂 Your house sounds wonderful and beautiful and I’m sure working on it must be so rewarding. Happy Retirement; my husband and I are both retired and I LOVE it, but it is almost a dilemma of its own to have so many things I have always wanted to do and some time to do some of them but not nearly all and how to choose and where to start. I overthink my decisions, probably. I am trying to write another book, but it is taking a looong time! I hope you will let us know when you finish your fiction! Your blog shows what a GREAT writer you are! We will miss you! Best of luck!
simon682 said:
Happy New Year to you too Dixie and thank you for taking the time to follow my blog. I have a copy of your book safely on my kindle and will enjoy reading it once I make a little space. I will also continue to follow your blog and wish you well in all your writing ventures.
Retirement seems to be a pretty good state of being. A busy one, but a good one.
Yours Simon.

Thank you so very much. I’ve very much appreciated the blogging company of a fellow traveller. I’m enjoying doing up the house as much as writing about my travels even when I uncover rot or stuff that has been boarded over that would have been better being treated many years ago. I’ll get there.
Good wishes. I’ll be making occasional visits to your blog.
